First I will try this:
which cpp
/opt/bin/cpp
export CPP=/opt/bin/cp
The server is not my life - and since I have change the fritz.box router that has webdav connection it becomes a little less important. Anyhow, now I understand the missing cpp - error that comes up some times.

Thanks again and greetings
Ralph

Your actual error from the log file is:
In file included from conftest.c:23:
/share/HDA_DATA/.qpkg/Optware/bin/../lib/gcc/arm-none-linux-gnueabi/3.4.4/include/limits.h:11:23: syslimits.h: No such file or directory

search on your system if you have a syslimits.h file. It should still work without cpp. From looking a bit further into it seems the canadian crosscompile that created your arm-gcc failed.

http://www.cygwin.com/ml/crossgcc/2005-08/msg00098.html

I would recommend getting a newer version of gcc if possible, it's already over 6 years old.

Thanks, now I understand, the gcc and the related preprocessor are installed as add on (ipkg package) onthe machine. Meanwhile I thought there is no cpp installed due to the limitations of the hardware, but it was just a config error. Very good, now I will try again.
Greetings - Ralph

I also have this with all the packages I try to build on my ARM machine (CH3SNAS with funplug). The problem is that configure looks for cpp in /lib/cpp which obviously doesn't exist. Just have a look in config.log for the exact error message. The solution is this simply to define CPP to a valid preprocessor. For me the following does the trick, or you might add the whole path (look for it with `which cpp`)
export CPP=cpp

This is not a davfs2 issue imho.

[field #13] Summary: configure error "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
[field #14] Original Submission: I tried to install davfs2 on an arm CPU NAS (Qnap 109 II), but I get an error - the last lines are:
configure: LFS is supported by neon
configure: SOCKSv5 is not supported by neon
configure: thread-safe SSL is not supported by neon
checking for dirent.h that defines DIR... yes
checking for library containing opendir... none required
checking how to run the C preprocessor... /lib/cpp
configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check

lib/cpp is not installed and when I ask the Package manager:
ipkg list | grep preprocessor
or
ipkg list | grep cpp
there are no results (I assume this is the result due to the low power ARM CPU).
neon is installed.
I attach the config.log for more details - my linux know how is too limited to find a result ...
With very kind regards
Ralph (Gö)

I'm not able to find information that would help to solve this issue. So I put it on the stack of bugs to be worked on sometime in the future.

I am not familiar with ARM systems. But looking at config.log the problem seems not to be the missing lib/cpp. The compiler is an ARM port of GCC which calls the preprocessor with "gcc -E". The test macros (which are from the GNU auto tools) try just this and get errors about missing header limits.h and also believe that header cdefs.h is not ISO C conforming. Only after this errors lib/cpp is tested.
(See lines 215 ff, 247 ff, 279 ff and 313 ff of config.log)

So it seems like there is something missing in your installation of C headers, or the test macros used by davfs2 do not fit the ARM port of GCC (which would be surprising).

But there are other programs (like neon) that use the same test macros as davfs2. Can you get any information how they managed to build on your ARM system?

Searching the GCC website for ARM related problems might help as well as looking for projects that deal with ARM, e.g. Debians ARM port.

I am not of much help in this. But I will search the autoconf manual for some hints.
