as we include several free flash players (including gnash), i don't feel linking to flash videos necessarily a bad thing.

My understanding is that YouTube videos are currently Flash-based (and therefore use non-free software), unless you register for the HTML5 beta with YouTube. The YouTube screenlet simply points directly to the standard Flash-based YouTube videos, encouraging the use of Flash.
