I can confirm that this seems to fix it.

I tried with cecd9127478e4e2c26105d5df71b3ed9b5dc4018 (ignore the version number on the filename of the newly attached screenshot), and it seems it looks exactly the same as the correct version.

This has now been fixed (sortof) in the git repository.  Please test.

I can confirm your observation.  It's a change in the smooth rasterizer, and I've written a mail to freetype-devel, asking the authors of this change to check whether it is bad luck that verdana looks inferior, or whether there is a real problem.

Note, however, that verdana is not intended to be displayed with anti-aliasing at this size.  According to the font's `gasp' table, the bytecode of verdana (tested version 2.43) expects that you are using B/W rendering up to 16ppem (9pt at 96dpi are 12ppem).

But as stated above, the problem you describe lies elsewhere.

It seems the font rendering seemed to get slightly worse from freetype version 2.4.2 to version 2.4.4. The text looks less sharp, more faint. Some arcs seem to have much less contrast to the background. Other strokes seem to get bolder.

I attached a screenshot of a GTK2 GUI app (an xchat preferences dialog). The only change was using a different version of the debian freetype package. The other settings were exactly the same. Compare the 'G' and the 'e' in the word 'Green' in the middle/left of the screen.

The front settings for the attached example were:
- Verdana 9 (coincidentally the same as the one displayed in the screenshot GUI elements)
- full hinting
- 96 DPI
- hinting enabled
- antialiasing enabled
- no LCD rendering
