Hi Daniele,

our postings crossed. Thank you for your insightful comment.
Your observation demonstrates the usability case of choosing a sane default format as well as my ability to misread documentation ;-)

Cheers,
Stefan.

Hi,

thank you for your reaction.

Indeed, it is very clear what phonebook_convert should do, but apparently it is unable to cope with the raw format of the Nokia 6230. As the script is a very thin wrapper around libgnokii functionality, I was hoping that the problem could be resolved here.

As for updating the man page, if I had read the full documentation properly before my 6230 broke down, I would not have had this problem of course. The usability issue is that the software appeared to be working sufficiently well after having read the options (gnokii --help phonebook) but for my purposes turned out not to. Then again, this might be a matter of perspective.

Cheers,
Stefan.

If I may add a comment, this fragment:

7. Name: Bla
Caller group: None
General number: 123

is a human readable format that man gnokii calls "verbose output".
The raw format is a semicolon separated format printed when passing the --raw optional argument to --getphonebook

The default --getphonebook format is meant to get read by users. As the manpage mentiones for --writephonebook you can use raw (recommended), ldif or vcard format (--getphonebook can save in any of these formats).

phonebook_convert is just an extra program, which is not provided within the gnokii suite. As you can read by running it, it says:

Usage: phonebook_convert type1 type2 <infile >outfile
Where type is one of --ldif, --raw or --vcard.

So it is clear what conversion does it do.

I will update the manpage to be more clear on relation between --getphonebook and --writephonebook.

Hi,

after faithfully having downloaded my phonebook regularly from my old 6230 I was a bit disappointed that the default format for downloading the phonebook is not supported for writing back to my new phone (a Nokia X2). I also did not manage to convert the phonebook file to a supported format. I tried phonebook_convert.c from the snippets, but it said "Data format is not valid".

There seem to be multiple "raw" formats around, which does not seem illogical except that it remains unclear which of these formats are supported by the conversion script. Here is a sample from the Nokia 6230 phonebook:

7. Name: Bla
Caller group: None
General number: 123

I would like to request that the default format for downloading a phonebook be changed into a format which can be processed again by either gnokii itself or an available conversion script.

Cheers,
Stefan.
