It's all fixed now. I've done the measurements and the speed-up is comparable to the old version (although it remains a minor issue).

Ranger is importing inside a loop. This is inefficient and shows if you are moving a lot through a directory. On my computer it can take some 30+% of the time to update the screen, which may be small can add up if you are moving a lot through large directories. Note that these measurements were taken from an older version of ranger as I cannot seem to get the new one to work with cProfile easily.
