This appears to be a problem with popen (at least on my machine). Popen seems to require a short delay before actually reading. Added utility.popen with this delay, however it would be nice to know what caused it!

Text viewer timeout had a bug from the conversion to gtk2, fixed.

Using the gnome default might be nicer. We should retain the ability to keep the file after playing -- this could be done by "wait"ing on the external viewer then popping up a dialog.

I cannot reproduce that bug.
mp3 files bring up the player window and mpg123 on my system. txt files bring up the text viewer widow
(which is a bit blank, I agree, but does display the text)

this brings up another question:
shall we use gnome's text/sound/video/whatever players ?
(after all, we already use the default html browser)

->browse local files
->select an ogg, mp3 or text file.
->click play/view (nothing happens)

Music works otherwise on my machine.
The text view brings up a window that is blank.
