If the basic functions of a website don't work without Javascript then that's a bug in the website, IMO.

The work-around in your case is to log in with Javascript turned off (or partly block scripts using e.g. Privoxy) and switch it back on after that. Inconvenient, but backporting a recent browser is a lot of work and that time is better spent on the next distro version so that other software is also more up to date.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hah. No.

  • devart without JS lacks some very basic features (e.g. add to favorites)...
  • gmail is basically working though.

  • google contacts DON'T work at all with JS disabled (shows a google services menu with empty screen under it).

Hah! You're great!!!

I disabled JS in Epiphany.

Now I can:

1) login OK into GMail which allows to switch to basicHTML view easily and predictably (but Filters probably still work partially: almost unusable);

2) login OK into DeviantArt!!!

This solves all issues!!!

I don't have an account on deviantart, but it seems the browser check is implemented in Javascript. Can you log in with Javascript turned off?

  • main gmail features are working in basicHTML mode. the only non-working feature I noticed is lacking of some necessary features in the Filters settings in basicHTML mode. --- But that's a peculiaruty of a basicHTML mode and exists in ALL browsers in gmail basic mode.
  • also, i extensively contacts.google.com as my central storage for all addressbooks/contacts, it also says that the browser is too old. I am not sure what is working and what is not, but didn't notice anything that STRICTLY doesn't work.
  • also, I sometimes use http://deviantart.com (a community tool for painters and visual still image artists). In gNS deltah's Epiphany www browser, devart doesn't allow to login AT ALL. it says to upgrade a browser.

It says that some features may not work correctly. Are any of the essential features actually not working?

If you can only get to the basic HTML view by typing the URL and not via the regular UI, then that's a bug in Gmail, IMO. Relying heavily on Javascript is usually not a good idea in the interest of software freedom [1] and usability [2]. Please ask Google to pay attention to these issues.

In any case, unless someone can make IceCat build on gNewSense 2.3 (again), we're not going to backport any browsers, because we don't have time to maintain it.

gmail using a Std View reports: You're using obsolete version of Firefox not supported by Gmail. Some features may not work correctly.

gmail using a Basic HTML view does not report this.

But nowadays it's not easy to switch gmail into basic html view, maybe even impossible (?) (from its UI).
