On my computer (and using the Qt version), the file browser allows me to drag and drop directories which are used often to a side panel. In this way, I can go to these directories using a single click, even after closing and restarting TeXmacs. Would this not be a simpler and better solution to your problem?

Andrey, you've described how you work. Now I will describe how I work:

Most of my .tm files are in ~/.TeXmacs/texts/AGT/ directory. Sometimes I want to put the result of PDF export of one of these files onto my site. To do this I export a .pdf into the directory ~/public_html/math/out/binaries/ and afterward call the command "sitecopy -u math" which copies the files from my local copy of the site onto an FTP server.

It is clear that to work this way, it is better when Export PDF dialog remembers the last directory used.

Well, I don't know. If I work on some article in some directory, and want to export it as .tex, or .html, or .ps, or .pdf, then the most natural place for all these forms is in the same directory, I think. And this is the current behaviour: all places are relative to the directory of the current .tm file. Most natural. If later I dicide that I want one of these files somewhere else, I simply say
mv foo.pdf /some/other/directory/
Maybe, there are use cases when what you say is more natural, but I cannot imagine them.

I never suggested to remember current directory between different invocations of texmacs process. (Well, it is questionable whether it is a good idea, anyway.)

I have advised just to remember the dir between openings of the file dialogs during one TeXmacs run.

For example I need to type a directory before each PDF export. It is clearly not good.

Where is this option? I don't see it (in Qt TeXmacs).

I really HATE programs which remember in which directory they were started last time. If I start texmacs in
/home/grozin/a/b/c/d
I expect this directory to be the default one (at least, until I save my current document to some other directory). Next time I start texmacs from
/home/grozin/e/f/g/h
Why in the hell I have to navigate from the old ~/a/b/c/d to the new ~/e/f/g/h ???

Use an option in the preferences under a new section called "Loading and saving". Many applications default to the "remember last directory" behaviour and some users might prefer consistent pain in the ass over unexpected better solutions ;)

Options proliferation is an issue, but there aren't that many (yet). Especially under the "Loading and saving" category.

I am still not convinced. E.g., how to switch back to
the default behaviour? I might exceptionally want to
export to a different directory, but then again to
the same directories as where there the files live
for ten other files.

- For auxiliary buffers it would make much sense indeed.
- For new buffers and "save as" as well. It's a real pain having to manually go to some reasonable place to save new work.
- For exporting I think it's best to default to the current directory but if the user chose another one at some point, then show that one instead.

This seems not clear to me. Currently all file operations
are done relative to the directory of the current buffer.
What you say would make sense only for auxiliary buffers
without a clear directory attached to them.

Confirmed under QTeXmacs svn:4862 (> 1.0.7.14) for html export under Ubuntu 11.04.

The export dialog box should remember the last directory which a file was exported to.
