Automatic detection of the format already works in the following cases:
- The file contains 3D metadata. (This should always be the case for all new 3D material, but unfortunately it is not.)
- The file name follows conventions as described in the manual under "File Name Conventions".
- The video has multiple streams.
- The resolution looks like left/right were stitched into a single frame

As you said, the only problematic case is left/right half width or top/bottom half height, where the resolution is the same as the resolution of conventional 2D video. In this case, only 3D metadata helps. See e.g. here: <http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bino-list/2011-08/msg00012.html>.

A comparison of left/right image half to guess if they are similar and therefore the video is 3D is hard to implement and fragile and will probably not be part of Bino. The proper solution is to put 3D metadata into the file so that every player knows what it is, and guessing is not necessary.

Therefore I'm closing this bug, but feel free to open new bugs with suggestions or problem reports. Your feedback is appreciated!

I didn't see a suggestion button, so this is submitted using the bug menu item.

Having a player that would automatically switch from 3D to 2D for regular movies would be a super enhancement. The Fuji AVI format is apparently easily recognized because it has 2 streams. Other formats are very problematical. I have seen some talk about a 3D tag which would be helpful, but can't find it anymore. Another player uses the name and switches to 3D if the name contains "3D". I don't remember, but it may require the 3D to be the last characters in the name.

If the video is 24fps with 720x1160 it is guarantted to be a 3D, the same as a movie with 1440x1080. The problematic ones are the 720x1080 with side by side half width compression, or over/under also with 2x vertical compression. One could compare the halves to see if they look similar.

As far as I can see BINO is one of the best as it seems to play the Fuji format very well and reliably. I have not looked at other input formats for BINO. The big lack is the inability to decode 3D dvd or cd formats and use the cd or dvd menus. But that could be remedied by combining it with VLC player code. I have also not tested it on slower computers where SPLASH is the only good choice for HD videos.
