Deactivating file previews did not make a difference

But I started from there and turned off each options till I came to the mouse and

mouse_enabled = False

was enough to allow ranger to react to my keystrokes. I don't think I'll miss the mouse so much :-)

Suggest closing this, with my continued gratitude.

Try deactivating file previews (type "set preview_files False" in ranger or put it into rifle.conf) and see if the hanging stops. If you use scope.sh, try without.

About your second question, something like this command will do the job:
PYTHON=/usr/bin/python2.7 make install

I have installed ranger on a number of machines, and like it a lot. Thank you for the time and care you have taken so far.

I do have one combination which is proving problematic: using ranger on a Fedora server when logged in from an OSX laptop. In that scenario ranger just "hangs", i.e. does not respond to any keyboard input, and has to be killed (which leaves the terminal window rather mangled).

I have successfully used ranger on a Ubuntu server when logged in from that OSX laptop, and have successfully used ranger on the Fedora server when logged in from another linux box (Mandriva 2007). The Fedora server is headless, so cannot use it directly.

Fedora server is "Fedora release 8 (Werewolf)", with "Python 2.7.2"

OSX laptop is OS X Lion (10.7.3), using iTerm2

One problem at install time: the base python on that machine is 2.5, and root's path will only find that one, so I had to run "make" without sudo in order that it could use python2.7. As permission problems showed up I did "chmod +w" on the relevant directories, then "chmod -w" afterwards.

I'm a competent pythonista/sysadmin if you'd like to suggest some debugging tips
