You could work around this by marking testfile2 with space. I'm working on a proper solution now though.

Hello!

Have files:
/tmp/testdir/testfile1
/tmp/testfile2

Do:
1. :cd /tmp/testdir/
2. :tab_new %d
4. <h> to uplevel
5. some <j> or <k> to stay on testfile2
6. <tab> to switch tab
7. :shell -w echo %S

got /tmp/testdir/ instead of /tmp/testfile2

I use ranger with recent today updates.
