Thanks. I've also disabled the translations because they still have the issue.
I've uploaded to the repository, but I lost the debtags. I'll check reprepro's overrides on the server tomorrow.

I made the patch.
It removes non-free references in the English version of the debian-faq.
The patch is attached with this comment.
Thanks,
rsiddharth.

Removing non-free references and keeping the faq as is, is, I presume, a sane way to resolve the issue.
I'll work on cleaning up the faq.
If I encounter problems patching/building the package. I'll comment about it here.
Thanks,
rsiddharth.

Ok, I'll take the cleaned up version if you think it's worth your time. If not, I'll just remove the package.

Turning it into a gNewSense FAQ will be really time consuming. If we're going to do that, then we will also have to change the package name to make it appropriate.
Most of the sections in debian-faq are relevant only to Debian. But there are certain sections that discuss things (about the Packaging system, for instance) that might be relevant to gNewSense.
One possible way to resolve the bug will be to remove non-free references, mention about the removal in FAQ's abstract and keep everything as is.
Another way, the simplest, will be to remove the package from the gNewSense repo.

I have not looked into this with great detail. Turning it into a gNewSense FAQ seems like a lot of work, even if we drop the translations. Are you sure that's feasible? On the other hand, in your judgement (as you did get a detailed look already) is it useful to have this in gNewSense if only the non-free references are removed?

I waded through the first six sections of the faq and edited it.
This one thing is not clear for me -- should I turn this into a gNewSense FAQ or should I just remove/edit non-free references & keeping everything else as is.
I've attached the two sections of the edited faq with this comment.
At hindsight, it looks as if I've inadvertently tried to make it a gNewSense FAQ. If this is not what I must be doing, let me know.
Thanks,
rsiddharth.

I need some help with patching, as I've not done that before.
I've downloaded the debian-faq source using
$ apt-get source debian-faq
The manual is written in DebianDoc SGML DTD (.sgml files). Should I just edit the SGML files and send the files as a tar ball or should I do something else?
Thanks,
rsiddharth.

The debian FAQ at /usr/share/doc/debian/FAQ/ (in Parkes) is very much Debian GNU/Linux specific.
It does not seem to release critical.
As Michał Masłowski says, it does have references to use non-free software like Google Earth.
In the meanwhile, I can work on making it gNewSense specific.
Thanks,
rsiddharth.

E.g. using Windows network drivers with ndiswrapper and some software from contrib or non-free. This document probably needs large changes, since it has Debian-specific answers, maybe including it is not necessary for the release.
Online copy (probably different version): http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-software.en.html.
