Hi,

OK, thanks. Have in mind that there is no fixed date for a new stable release date yet. However last few days I am thinking that it might be good idea to release the trunk version with all the changes since April as the new stable release. There are few significant bugs fixed in trunk and porting back to 0.0.13-3 doesn't seem such a good idea somehow.

I'm closing the bug report. Please reopen it (or create a new one) when the new stable release comes out. This might happen in August or September.

Hi,

Any news on that issue? Could I close the bug report as fixed?

Today I just tested svn-trunk rev. 405 Build date: 05 Jul 2013 and it seems the CPU usage is better now. I'll report back if I found anything else. Thanks a lot.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting back. The initial idea behind Linterna Magica was ... and probably still is to work in random webistes by patterns and regular expressions. With this in mind it is not a good idea to list all supported/know websites with an @include rule, because this will reak support for websites that are supported by patterns and regular expressions and are not know to me.

An option could be to add a custom rule similar to the include, which can be kept persistent with the helper script (http://linterna-magica.nongnu.org/#download-util) that is ment to keep configuration options. This way if there are rules in this custom ruleset, the script will run only on those pages overriding the default GM @include http://. rule. Any comments on this idea?

I'm afraid things haven't change a lot in version 13.2 but I don't think this is such a big issue, I'll just stick to my original idea and limit linterna magica use to youtube by editing the following two lines on the code:

// @include http://www.youtube.com/watch*
// @include https://www.youtube.com/watch*

If I ever need to use it else where I can just add more sites.

Maybe a better fix would be to add all the website that are know to work with linterna magica, so that linterna magica is only activated in those site, but this is just an idea.

Hi,

Any changes on this issue with the latest stable version or the svn builds?

Trisquel 5.5 STS Brigantia is the name of my GNU/Linux distribution and its browser is called "Abrowser", which is base on firefox. I'm using version 19.0 which I'm assuming is base on version 19.0 of firefox, but I'm sure we are always behind updates.

I'm sure I'm using the newest version of linterna magica (0.0.13-1), I checked. I uninstalled and installed it back on just to make sure. Also I wouldn't be able to watch youtube videos any more if I were using a previous version, and I don't have any other greasy monkey scripts installed.

I'm sorry I lied when I said "This happens no matter what page I'm visiting." I didn't actually tried it on a lot of pages.

Browsing through deviantart.com gallerias pulls the problem right out immediately. For instance:

https://www.deviantart.com/art/Carciphona-Too-Late-57467541

Making a search for a word here does something similar, but not as bad:

http://www.wordreference.com

Now that I notice, those pages raise the CPU usage quite high by their own, but linterna magica makes the problem a lot worse.

I'm sure those pages use a lot of JavaScript to work out, so I totally agree that this problem has something to do with linterna magica having to parse through all that code. I believe though, that the problem described in the following post, also increases the problem greatly, since it makes those pages load twice every time:

https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?38416

Any way, maybe the version of firefox I'm using has some performance issues too. In any of the cases, my work around seems like the best option for me now.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting. Which browser and version is that? It is possible to have high CPU usage and loading problems caused by the JavaScript parsing code, but it should be fixed. There is a prevention mechanism that wont scan too big scripts that are usually the problem.

The work around with the @include tag you've used is probably the right way to go. Unfortunately it can't be used by default, because it would break other websites.

Check that you do not have more than one version of Linterna Mágica installed. Since 0.0.13-1 the namespace in the Greasemonkey scope changed and older versions have to be uninstalled.

Could you share few links where the problem occurs?

To temporally solve this issue I edit the script in the following part:

// @include http://*
// @include https://*

with

// @include http://www.youtube.com/watch*

So that linterna magica is only use when trying to watch a video on youtube, which is the place were I use it the most.

This happens no matter what page I'm visiting.

I don't think is related but I'm also experimenting the following problem:

Hi, I'm registering very high CPU usage on Trisquel 5.5 STS Brigantia using both panel applets system monitor and CPU frequency monitor. So high, it affects my system's gui general performance.

It happens while linterna magica 0.0.13-1 is enable and I'm navigating on the internet. Every time I open a new link in my browser, the CPU usage goes up, but after a while it goes normal again.

Is this normal? Should I have linterna magica disable while not using it?
