By "the bug is not present" I've meant that the signature encryption is not done. The signatures are extracted the normal way.

Hi,

Could you test the latest Git (master) sources? I've implemented something like a work-around. A notification is displayed to the user when it is detected that the signatures are not present or (assumption) encrypted.

While I was testing with a proxy it seamed that the bug is not present. I was able to play a WebM URL by copying it to the browser address bar. Since WebM is handled by the browser, the proxy connection is used.

Could you confirm my observations? In the worst case scenario, you will see the notification.

I am presently using viewtube for Youtube and LM for everything else. Not sure if Youtube would do it for all videos, I think these are copyrighted material. Thanks for the hard work, it is no big deal, LM works for enough sites. :)

Hi,

That is bad news. Unfortunately I do not have the time to update so often, and probably will always be late with the fix for it to have any effect.

I can introduce a message for such clips that will recommend using youtube-dl or ViewTube, because it is assumed they would have (better) support for such clips. Will that work for you?

That is not a good solution, because if YouTube does this for some clips it is a matter of time they introduce it for all. And then we are doomed. :( Unfortunately I'm out of ideas.

Hi,

Yeah, Viewtube is updated every few days automatically with greasemonkey.

Hi,

Any news for this issue? Are you still required to upgrade to newer versions of ViewTube and youtube-dl every few days?

Hi,

I'm currently preoccupied and cannot look into this. I'm hopping I'll have some time at the end of the week.

Hi,

Just upgraded youtube-dl to version 2013.7.31 and it works again. I am attaching the dump file for this new version.

Hi,

Youtube-dl has stopped working on the link tonight, and Viewtube has stopped working as well. So I suppose they change every 4 or 5 days as Viewtube's developer said.

Hi,

That is definitely not a good news.

OK, last idea.

Could you provide the youtube-dl output [1] for a Vevo link that with Linterna Mágica loads the interface but does not playback? Could you also provide the Linterna Mágica debug messages for this link? Thanks!

Hi,

Just tested youtube-dl version 2013.07.25.2 on the link I posted, it does work.

Hi,

Still not working. Attached the debug logs. Viewtube version 07.26 still works but the previous one (07.24) has stopped working. It has been only 3 days since july 26 so if vevo changes every 5 days still have two days to go to see what happens.

As I said before it is probably not worth your trouble to support these videos.

Thanks again for the wonderful script.

Hi,

I've fixed the youtube-dl decryption code in Linterna Mágica. It now decrypts exactly as youtube-dl. Could you please test revision 413? Thanks.

Hi,

I updated Viewtube today to version 2013.7.24 and it works again. But here is what the developer said "Try the latest version 07.24. It will work for (probably) 2 days, they change it after 2 days and then after 5"

So if I understand correctly it is a moving target, maybe it isn't worth your time and effort to try to fix it.

Thanks for the great script and great help.

P.S. I will try youtube-dl after waiting for two days and see what happens and report back. But please don't feel obliged to do more work on it in the mean time, I am sure you have more important things to do.

Hi,

Thank you for the information. I've already tested some of the ViewTube code with Linterna Mágica, and it worked. It is still not officially in the repositories. I've also found some errors in the code I've implemented from youtube-dl. I'll try to fix that.

The strangest thing is that youtube-dl and ViewTube seem to use different approach for some cases and I am unable to find information on what and why is happening during the decryption of the signatures.

Could you please test the latest version of youtube-dl [1] [2] and tell me is it still working for you?

Thanks a lot for the cooperation!

Hi,

It seems that Youtube has changed something again and Viewtube no longer works on those videos. I filed a bug report there and waiting for it to be confirmed. So perhaps it may not be too useful to investigate its codes right now.

Hi,

Just tested rev.408 on the same link and unfortunately it still doesn't work.

When flash is enabled LM loads but with a message "waiting for video plugin" and nothing happens. When flash is disabled LM doesn't load at all, there is just a blackbox saying that adobe flash is not installed

Attached are two debug logs, one with flash enabled and one disabled.

Thanks

Hi,

I've borrowed some ideas and code from youtube-dl for the decrypting of the signatures when they are given in the s=<SIG> format. Could you please test revision 408 and report back? Please attach the debug messages again.

If my understanding of the youtbe-dl Python code is correct and I've ported it successfully to JavaScript, you should be able to play the problematic videos.

If you still have problems I'll try to use the ViewTube code in Linterna Mágica.

Thanks.

Hi,

Just to correct my previous post. The latest version of Viewtube (2013.7.1200 does work on Vevo.

I was using an old version earlier.

Hi,

This time LM loads but videos don't play. Got a "waiting for plugin" message. As control I tested LM on other videos and it still works.

I attached again two debug logs, one when flash is enabled, one when it is disabled, on Firefox 22.

Thanks for the great work!

P.S. I found this on Smplayer's website
http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/en/changes
It seems that Youtube may have changed something, perhaps only outside the U.S.

Hi,

I was able to duplicate your results by using an HTTP proxy in Canada. It seems that for Vevo clips the signatures are given in s=<SIG> instead of sig=<SIG> format when I'm using the proxy. I'm hoping this is the only problem. I was able to patch the code and work-around this bug, but I am unable to fully test it. Since I am behind a proxy, the page is requested as I am in Canada, but the video plugin does not use the proxy, so I cannot test the playback.

Could you please est rev406, and again attach the debug messages? I've added extra debug output in this revision and deliberately made LM load 2 seconds later in YouTube. I'm hoping this revision works, because I am out of ideas for now. Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for the debug messages. At first glance it seems that LM is unable to extract the links from the url_encoded_fmt_stream_map JavaScript variable in YouTube, because it stops after that. If, so it could be easily fixable by changing the regular expressions.

I'll try to reproduce the condition with an http proxy and possibly fix the bug during the weekend. Keep your fingers crossed, so I can really work on LM this weekend. :)

Hi,

Apart from the link I gave, all Vevo videos I tried did not work.

I am attaching the debug logs for the link from my first post, there are two logs, one with adobe flash plugin enabled, another without.

I am in Canada.

Hi,

Thansk for the information. I've tested again with unbranded Firefox 22 on Trisquel with and without flash. In either way the clip starts with HTML5 player, even when I disable the HTML5 trial. [1] I'm still able to watch the clip withLinterna Mágica. As far as I remember I've never had problems with Vevo clips so far.

It could be as you said DRM related issue. Could you share your location/country? Maybe I could reproduce the issue with an HTTP proxy?

Could you share few more links that are not working with LM?

Could you enable Linterna Mágica's debug option (set to 5) and attach the messages for a YouTube link that does not load? When debuging is enabled a window with debug messages is available at the bottom of the screen (see attached image). Double-clicking while holding Ctrl in this window selects/marks all messages.

Hi,

I have tested on Firefox 22 on both Ubuntu12.04 and Fedora19.

On Ubuntu I have tried with both Adobe Flash enabled and disabled and LM didn't work in either case. When flash was enabled the video would just play in flash and LM didn't load. When flash was disabled I saw a black box complaining that flash was absent.

In Fedora I haven't installed any flash plugin, neither adobe flash nor gnash. I saw only a blackbox.

In both cases LM plays other Youtube videos without problems. After further testing it seems that this phenomenon occurs only with the Vevo ones.I just found out that smtube (the Youtube player for Smplayer) cannot play these videos either. Maybe it is a DRM thing?

I am using LM unstable build rev 405 with the gecko-mediamplayer as backend.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting. The link you have provided is working for me with rev405, Abrowser 21.0, Firefox 21.0 and Firefox 22.0. With and without Gnash.

Could you give some more information? For example your browser and its version. Any flash plugin installed? The userscript extension (Scriptish vs. Greasemonkey) if you are using Firefox. Any other link that does not load.

Thanks.

Hi,

I found that there are some Youtube videos for which LM just doesn't load, as if it has not been installed at all.

e.g

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbpMpRq6DV4

This happens only for some videos, checked a few others and LM works ok.

Tested with rev405 from daily build.

Thanks
