The left/right alternating mode is very unreliable, and I regret adding it in the first place. It seldom works and there is nothing I can do about that. The real solution is to use OpenGL stereo (with a graphics card that supports it).

I just upgraded to an Intel Core i5 with HD 2500 graphics (i945 kernel driver). The weird thing is that my system got way slower with bino on left/right alternating output (I had an Intel Celeron G550 before, which worked reasonably well for not too high bitrates).

What is really weird is that the FPS is somewhat fixed w.r.t. to my monitor's framerate. For 60Hz, I get 10fps, for 75Hz I get 12.5, and for 120Hz I get - you guessed it - 20fps.

When I set vblank_mode to '0' I get a few frames more, but the picture is stuttering.

Any idea what could be causing this? The other output modes are working fine and are pretty fast.
