You probably refer to the string/unicode difference?
That is not the cause: os.path.isdir(cur) should work with str and unicode.

It is the caller in viewportMenu.py that is at fault here: cur should be a directory or file path, but it is an InputItem. The origin of the bug is the change in the 'func' parameter of the input button: previously it passed the button text to the called function, now it passes the input field instead.

Commit ab6d715 fixes the call in viewportMenu.py.

Viewport/Background Color/show back ground image failes

The reason is the char/string difference in python.
It can be solved by adding one line in draw.py after line 274

273 if cur is None:
274 cur = pf.cfg['workdir']
cur = str(cur)
