I would strongly prefer the chktexrc file since this is something which is not restricted to one tex file and more a global thing (especially if you follow the "one chapter in one file" paradigm). Thank you very much!

Hmm. That could maybe work. The way I've done it a few times is to create a macro and then use that macro. I do this partly to make sure I don't misspell it as well. Would the list be okay in the chktexrc file, or would you want it in the TeX file itself?

Maybe then the ideal solution is to allow for global custom exceptions (ie the user provides a list of allowed expressions Alice1--Bob1 etc.). Is this possible?

Yeah. This is a tricky situation because Alice--Bob is correct in some cases and Alice-Bob in others (as I'm sure you're aware). Perhaps the default is not ideal, but since n-dashes between words are rare, it was chosen that the default would be to warn about Alice--Bob.

There are two ways to work around it.

1. Use line suppressions (requires a recent-ish version of chktex):
Alice--Bob theorem % chktex 8

2. Change the HyphDash section in your chktexrc to include 2:
HyphDash
{
1 2 3
}

Or perhaps you had an idea as to how to make it smarter?

If one refers to a theorem developed by two authors, then the en-dash is recommended, as in "Alice--Bob theorem" (see http://tex.stackexchange.com/a/3821/34554). However ChkTex incorrectly warns in this case that another dash should be used. Is it possible to improve this error?
