Ah, you are not using the latest git version of acl. I see how this bug can occur in the last tagged version, v2.2.52.

Since then, Mike Frysinger has bravely converted the build system over to autotools, and this bug doesn't exist there anymore. So there's nothing more to do here; please either work around this bug by unsetting LINGUAS or use the git head. Thanks.

upon finish of configure script CATALOGS variable is empty or not set.

saying about gettext / autoconf i can not tell their versions as i try to upgrade all the packages in one move.

never used autogen.sh before
currently i don't run configure and make tools separately, only as part of makepkg

Aha, in ABOUT-NLS, it says:

Internationalized packages usually have many `po/LL.po' files, where LL gives an ISO 639 two-letter code identifying the language. Unless translations have been forbidden at `configure' time by using the `--disable-nls' switch, all available translations are installed together with the package. However, the environment variable `LINGUAS' may be set, prior to configuration, to limit the installed set. `LINGUAS' should then contain a space separated list of two-letter codes, stating which languages are allowed.

Looking a little further, I see that LINGUAS is checked at configure time, and that together with po/LINGUAS, it determines which languages to install. The result ends up in the CATALOGS variable in Makefile.

This is all done by gettext / autoconf.

So could you please check what CATALOGS is being set to in your case? Is there a more recent version of gettext that fixes the bug, or is your version of gettext "too new" and somehow broken? (Note that trying out different versions of gettext at least requires to run ./autogen.sh.)

thanks for reply and sorry about mistake in bug's description.
the correct one should be as follows
if variable LINGUAS is kept with its contents, such as LINGUAS='ru en'
and i run commands:
$ cd /var/abs/local/acl
$ makepkg -s
the process breaks with following info
make[2]: *** No rule to make target 'en.mo', needed by 'default'. Stop.
include/buildrules:35: recipe for target 'po' failed
make[1]: *** [po] Error 2
make[1]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
Makefile:47: recipe for target 'default' failed
make: *** [default] Error 2
==> ERROR: A failure occurred in build().
Aborting...

I cannot reproduce. Can you figure out what makepkg is trying to do and what exactly fails?

unable to compile the acl package unless the variable LINGUAS is has not been set to '' [none]

system - Arch

[inside the package "acl" directory]
LINGUAS='' makepkg -s

not a bug may be, but no comfort either
thanks
