ok for stretch
so I will remove the rounding and the type check and always returns a Float array. I ll make the changes and submit

I'm not sure why you call this equalize. Perhaps normalize would be a better name: it seems to be equivalent with this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalization_%28image_processing%29
But we have already a normalize function, which normalizes the vector length. linearNormalization might be an alternative, or, from the above webpage, rangeExpansion or stretch. (I like the last because of its simplicity).

The implementation should probably be made type-independent.

Can we add this function? check if you like the implementation as it is. the only thing I am not sure how to deal with integers. I used the function round.
