Especially under GNU/Linux it is quite a pain to locate datafiles, since there is no information directly passed to the executable that gives any hint on where they resist, normally this is solved by hard coded pathnames in the executable, but that makes same unrelocatable, which isn't good. There are numerous workarounds like following a relative path on argv[0], checking the current directory, searching in standard locations (/usr/local), following a hard compiled path or reading /proc/self/exe. These workarounds should be implemented at library levels, since doing it in the a application is quite a pain.
