Thanks again. However, I don't feel easy with a proper interface – any suggestions are highly welcomed!

Additionally, I'll spend time with variation font support the next months, so I ask volunteers to chime in...

So as the color font format is now pushed by Adobe & Microsoft, (2017 is gonna be the color font year?!) it would be great to implement it :)

Google’s embedded PNGs in font files are supported, and there’s bug #44689 for Microsoft’s layered color fonts. Here’s a request for Mozilla/Adobe/W3C’s SVG in OpenType.

Basically, glyphs are described using SVG, so they can have several layers and colors. A simple implementation would support this, a more complex one could support gradients, animations, etc. As in Microsoft’s spec, there can be CPAL and COLR tables to define the colors.

Reference implementation: Gecko.
