} can move forward through double-blank lines like those in the help file, but { cannot move backward through them.

I'm not sure. I'm looking for a way to reproduce the problem,
but haven't been able. I considered the possibility of some
bug that valgrind could see (no luck). If I had been able to
reproduce this with Windows XP, I could have built a version
with tracing enabled (and added some traces) to see the steps
in "gotobop" (basic.c). Reading the code, I have an impression
that you could have found some problem in detecting blank lines.
If that's so, then the reverse (using '}') should give similar
results.

The process doesn't hang, it's just that { stops moving.
What can I do to further elucidate winvile's internal state?

Checking that version (on Windows XP), I do see a double
blank line at that point, but (running without any customization)
don't see a hang...

What version is that? (I don't recall any relevant bug, but can check).

Hmm. I'm on WinVile, with no customized mappings or .vilerc.
For me, the cursor halts on line 7415. It does NOT get anywhere near the beginning of the file.

I'm missing something: when I type the "{{", it moves to the top of the file, and repeated "{" does nothing (since it is at the top of the file). What should it do?

To reproduce:
Open the vile help file.
G
{{
Then press { as many times as you like, or give it a large count; either way, you will move no more.
