Looking at timesbi.ttf versions 2.82 (the `core' fonts provided in many GNU/Linux distributions) and 6.96 (Windows 10) I see that both come with the same `gasp' table: In the range 8-16ppem, you should use B/W rendering with gridfitting!

In other words, you get bad results if you apply normal grayscaling hinting at this small size. Right now, FreeType doesn't take the `gasp' table into account; you have to this by yourself.

On the other hand, MacOS doesn't apply hinting at all; you get similar results if you load the font in FreeType without hinting.

Summary: There is no bug, as far as I can see.

Hello, I am using the latest FreeType (2.8) and experiencing issues with some glyphs of TrueType fonts.

As an example, I want to show letter 'r' at sizes 12pt and 13 pt of "Times New Roman Bold Italic" rendered at 72 DPI.
At sizes 13pt both FreeType and MacOS native rendering looks good. But the 12pt is screwed for FreeType.

The Issue is not actual for Regular and Italic styles of this font.

Notes.
I am using FT_LOAD_DEFAULT and FT_RENDER_MODE_NORMAL.
