Rather embarrassingly, it seems an upgrade to fontconfig at PCLinuxOS has fixed the problem, so this can be closed.

Just to be clear, I wasn't using skia when that screenshot was taken and I see the same effect in xterm and konsole, so it's nothing to do with Firefox.

This is known issue with Skia, which is used by both Firefox and Chromium. It was supposed to be resolved in just-released Firefox 56 if you use the bundled Skia and in Skia HEAD. Can you test Firefox 56 to confirm that?

I'm not clear whether this is one bug or two, but the combined effect is to make font rendering look very odd.

1. Font glyphs are truncated on their right-hand side. This is partcularly noticeable when viewing pages in a gecko browser with gfx.canvas.azure.backends and gfx.content.azure.backends set to "skia".

2. Aliasing varies by colour with the result fonts become fringed and letters with narrow verticals might change colour completely.

I have tried playing around with colour separations to see whether it is possible to align images of glyphs to eliminate the fringing, but that is not possible.

I am using freetype 2.8.1 compiled with gcc 7.2.1 on PCLinuxOS with both Plasma 5 and LXDE desktops and see the problem on both. The PCLinuxOS lead developer believes this is an upstream problem so I am reporting it here.

I attach a screenshot showing the result at x10 magnification.
