I'd like any user to be able to mount the box.com account.

Unfortunately davfs2 requires an entry in fstab. It's not practical to add an entry for every user. I'm currently wrapping canonicalize_file_name in an LD_PRELOAD library so that it understands ~. Then I can use an entry

https://da ... ox.com/dav ~/mnt davfs user,noauto 0 0

and it will work for all users. But I'd rather have a configuration option that just disables check_fstab. The only check we need is that the use has write access to the mount point.
