Thanks for the font. Inspite of having `.cff' as the file name extension, this is a subsetted TrueType font, with bytecode.

And your observation is correct! The rendering process is as follows.

  • The up-arrow glyph is a composite glyph, containing one element (namely the left-arrow glyph) rotated by 90°.
  • FreeType takes the left-arrow glyph, applies its associated bytecode, and rotates the glyph as requested.

I consider this behaviour as a font bug. The proper solution would be to have a separate `arrow' glyph without any bytecode, and both the left-arrow and up-arrow glyph should be composites referencing `arrow', but with separate bytecode to avoid the unexpected behaviour you are experiencing.

This is not a FreeType bug. You should report this to the Wingdings3 maintainers.

For the font Wingdings3 we encountered a problem for the symbol upper arrow.

When vertical size is increased and horizontal size is unchanged, we got from the freetype rendered glyph wider, but, vertical size of the bitmap is unchanged. And vice versa, when horizontal size is increased, glyph bitmap becomes higher, but horizontal size is not changed. It looks like width and height are mixed up in the meaning for this font (or may by just for the character).

I attached C-sample with the problem and the text output to show the problem.
I didn't attach font file to the ticket. So, please tell, how can I provide the font file, so you can reproduce it.
