The diff tool can certainly be improved, but this matter is quite tricky: when making the tool more fine grained, the risk is that TeXmacs will find many similarities between paragraphs that definitely should be treated as different.  In that case, the diff file gets clobbered by lots of meaningless micro-differences.

In your specific example, TeXmacs indeed considers the two paragraphs as a match only if either their starts or endings coincide.  This explains the observed behavior, which is not necessarily a bug.

I therefore transform this bug into a wish.

The version-comparison tool is invaluable when you work with co-authors on a manuscript. In that case, changes are often local and minor, in which case you really want the finest grain possible.

Yet, for some unclear reason it occurred to me several times that the diff would switch to block-grained for whole paragraphs of plain text (no tags involved).

For now I have found no other work around than breaking down the document into smaller chunks and saving them separately to get out the expected fine-grained diff on the parts with problems. But that is a pain and it isn't very reliable either.

I attach 2 files that allow reproducing the problem in Texmacs 1.99.12. Note that you can get the expected fine-grained diff by just changing the capitalization of the first "O" in new.tm.

As a side remark, the fine grain could sometimes be even finer. For instance, when adding a coma after a word or correcting a missing plural "s" or the Capitalization of a word, it could make sence to only point that small change and not the entire word... Could there be a "super-fine" setting?
