Fixed in CVS.

I meant let's not implement the-number-of-instruments thingy. I'm all 'go' for the program change.

Well, if program change will be supported some day, maybe then the number of instruments need to be higher, since most synths have at least 100 samples + GM. But let's not implement it if no-one really needs it.

But in the meantime, how about displaying the A-Z also in the instrument selector. It would be easier to just use letters on both (tracker and selector), instead of trying to figure out what letter corresponds to number 19 and what number is Q...

One stupid way to increase the number of the instruments without extra column: case-sensitivity. But I wouldn't suggest it. Too complicated for the user.

Yes, the program number indeed is a missing feature. I haven't implemented it simply because I don't use or like it myself but maybe it could be useful for other users. And yes, OctaMED also supports program changes.

I'll file a new bug about the program change issue and keep this one open if it seems that 35 instruments is not enough for some people. It would mean though that each channel would be one more character wide in the tracker so that two hexadecimal characters could be used for the instrument number.

Hmm. True, hadn't noticed that instruments represent (only) MIDI channels.. Always thought that I could assign a program number to instruments. This means I need to fiddle with my synth to set up the right sound, instead of just turning on the synth and pressing play on Tutka. (Of course the SysEx'es help on this)

How about a possibility to set program number in the instrument? This would bring up a need to send a program change when the instrument changes on the same midi channel, but that shouldn't be hard.

Or is this a design decision I have to live with?

All other midi trackers I've seen use the program number (IT, FT2, shaketracker, Buzz(?) )

This could also be easily fixed by making the tracker widget display a two hex digit instrument number instead of 1-9 + A-Z. This could be done rather easily but the current solution has worked fine so far :)

This could be more relevant though if at some point support for more than one MIDI interface was implemented...

This is because currently Tutka uses numbers 1-9 and characters A-Z as instrument numbers in the tracker display. Actually this is incorrect, the maximum should be 35, thanks ;). There is no other reason for this one.

Do you really need more instruments since there are only 16 MIDI channels? Yes, I know it's possible to create multiple instruments with different hold/transpose/volume values that use the same MIDI channel but personally I've never even done this...

37 seems a bit little, I'd go at least for 255

Or is this weird bug, but I can't set instrument higher than 37
