when checking connectivity with icmp, the ping command is used, on linux (redhat) you need to use -w to specity a timelimit, otherwise ping will never return if no responses are received

It seems a strange and subtle problem because, if I run zonecheck under strace, it works :-{

Whatever the domain, ZoneCheck displays the list of nameservers then apparently freezes. If I get impatient and stop it ten minutes later, the trace is:
