The syntax highlighting code needs two malloc-s for each line. The attached patch removes the malloc-s entirely by replacing YY_INPUT. The new YY_INPUT reads directly from the line, so there is no need to allocate a flex buffer.

Further improvement is possible, but much harder. Flex still copies each line to its buffer. It does that for two reasons:
1. Buffering when working with files
2. To be able to zero-terminate yytext (which is a pointer) inplace in the buffer itself.

Since we don't need yytext to be zero terminated in theory we could modify the skeleton file to avoid the copying at all.
