Oh yeah, and I know that you can skip the checks with --disable-modules-check, but that's really beside the point, I think.

If you run setup.py without access to a X display, it'll report "Error: PyGTK-1.99.13 or newer is required." You can fix that by removing the import gtk line - pygtk.require should be enough - but there are other trouble spots. This should really be fixed before we release.
