it is because you are using framebuffer device.. it is the highest resolution.
modify the XF86Config-4 for nativ support of your chipsets or continue crying...

Booted GNOPPIX 0.6.0-rc1 on my laptop which supports
native resolution 1400x1050. However I wasn't asked for resolution during boot and via the gnome's "change resolution" dialog I can only get is as high as 1024x768
