Perhaps gpg-agent could be considered as well.

Another solution might be for monotone to prompt for the password and then cache it in memory for a configurable amount of time. This way the user can have a little convenience without storing his/her password in cleartext on disk.

I am going to leave a comment to say that I think this is a great idea along with my vote. Especially since commits to your own repository require one to give a passphrase and the workflow of monotone definitely works well with committing different work units often. Since I work on systems with lots of NFS sharing of home directories I am a little paranoid about putting my key passphrase in my .monotonerc.

If it helps at all, this might be a great summer of code project for someone.

it'd be nice to have some sort of background program which signs things, rather than passphrases in .monotonerc. either use ssh-agent or write your own.
