.mt-attrs' format changed recently to a "safer" one and the documentation was updated accordingly (IMHO, it now correctly explains its format). Furthermore, the field separator is now ASCII LF rather than a whitespace, so filenames with spaces in front are supported (I guess).

I second this!

Since the documentation states that th .mt-attrs file might be handled by more than one person, allowing for comments would be nice, too.

Even better: Provide a hook function for the file to handle the .mt-attrs file automatically on adds/drops/commits. It is fairly straight foreward process: Just add all files with the exec bit set to .mt-attrs

The current behavior of .mt-attrs is:
-- all lines must be of the form
<attr><1 whitespace><value><1 whitespace><filename>
-- any lines not of this form are silently ignored
The documentation's example has multiple spaces separating the fields; it does not work. So that's a documentation bug.

More generally, that the format is so strict, and that failure is so silent, is a bug as well.

One might just say, allow multiple spaces. This is complicated by the question of whether one wants to be able to support filenames with spaces at the beginning; currently we are consistently saying "no" everywhere in monotone, but on the other hand, filesystems do allows filenames with spaces at the beginning, and I recently saw someone actually using this feature for their documents. (To force "preface.doc" to come before "chapter1.doc" in asciibetical ordering; since they were using windows, they were clicking, and the extra space wasn't the inconvenience it would have been on the command line...)
