This was implemented by njs@ (submitter) in November 24th, 2004 (AFAICT). "monotone --full-version" provides the requested information.

Hm, interesting idea. However, it will need to be expanded, so those getting a source distribution from other sources than the database can enjoy monotone without having the build fail half way.

An idea to implement this would be to have a header file containing the relevant data be produced by the Makefile at some appropriate moment if 'monotone status' could be executed with no error. Something like this, basically:

@if (monotone status) > build.h.new 2> /dev/null; then
mv build.h.new build.h
fi

Then have the target distdir include that file in the distribution.

Sounds like a viable solution?

with --verbose perhaps this could also list build time, host, user and source directory as well, all of which I would personally find somewhat useful at times.

This might require that --verbose is renamed to --debug first though, which is listed as bug 8919 I believe.

'make dist' or 'make build' or whatever should run 'monotone status' in the source tree, and embed the output in 'monotoe --version's output.

So you might have
$ monotone --version
monotone 0.13 (tree id: dcbebf19bca7783aace7c39bccb41c1282a47d14)
or
monotone 0.13 (tree id: 78ead6cfb724d72566ef1bc84d0ef75ab2ed3d16, based off dcbebf19bca7783aace7c39bccb41c1282a47d14)

(The latter being what you get when monotone status said that the 'old' and 'new' manifests were different, i.e. the actual version build is one that hasn't been checked anywhere at build time.)

This would be really handy for reproducing bug reports and things; it'd also be really handy as an advertisement for how to use monotone to make it really easy to reproduce bug reports and things...
