In the startup sequence, Gnoppix 0.6.0RC2 copies the contents
of the directory /etc/skel to /home/credativ UNCONDITIONALLY,
AFTER the contents of the saved configuration archive has
been loaded. Thus the user settings are overwritten by defaults.

/etc/rc2.d/S90startme

The way Knoppix does it now is to use something like

rsync -Ha --ignore-existing /etc/skel/.* /home/credativ

the --ignore-existing flag ensures that existing files are
not overwritten.
I have tried this in the "startme" file and it seems
to work better [I never thought about using "rsync" to
copy local files before, but the --ignore-existing behaviour
seems useful].
