I know this report is .... yikes, 8 years old, but I use nmh on MacOS X every day and it's not slow at all. I don't think this is a problem anymore.

I've been using nmh on Mac OS X for about a year now (and nmh/mh on other UNIX variants for many years before that), and I've found that mailboxes of significant size are fantastically slow.

I thought maybe there was something wrong with this machine, or a performance problem with similarly named files in HFS+, but I really think it's an nmh problem. I don't seem to have this problem on other UNIX systems, nor do I have a problem just looking at the files in my mail folder directories with things like "more".

Are there any other people really using nmh on OS X? Have you seen this? It's not just a little slow for me, it's unbelievably slow. Minutes to just scan or show a single message by number (in a mailbox with only about 10000 messages in it). No, I'm not kidding.

Even just mhpath is slow (over a minute for a single message by number). Is there something about the way nmh handles directory scanning that's deficient on OS X? Or is it really just me?
