After being updated from the archives, usplash-theme-gnewsense now works again on my system (gNS 2.3).
Thanks samgee

My test build of usplash-theme-gnewsense (rev. 2) worked. I've pulled in on sandbox, so this should make it into the archive in a few hours.

I tried usplash-theme-debian from the repos and it works OK, even without vga= option, so it looks like the problem is in the usplash-theme-gnewsense package itself.

After the system started up, I see the following messages on tty1:

Starting up ...
Loading, please wait...
usplash: No usable theme found for 640x480
screen init failed

Here's the contents of my /etc/usplash.conf:

$ cat /etc/usplash.conf
# Usplash configuration file
# These parameters will only apply after running update-initramfs.

xres=800
yres=480

My hardware is Eee-PC 701 (with 800x480 screen).

I tried to set the vga=0x0311 explicitly in the /boot/grub/menu.lst and the splash is shown up now, but instead of the nice gNewSense logo I see some crippled TV calibration screen.

Any ideas how to resume the screen with gNewSense logo? Also, it is still unknown why one need now to manually pass the vga= option to the Linux.

After getting the recent (2010-04-04) "massive" updates (including kernel 2.6.24-27-generic), my gNS 2.3 i386 system has stopped showing up the boot splash screen and started showing the regular boot messages scrolling by.

Displayed boot messages start with this row (from /var/log/syslog):

kernel: [   29.902095] usb 1-1: device not accepting address 2, error -71

After this, the process continues and system seems to work well (no more or deep checks done).

Here below is the complete list of packages which were updated on my system just before the bug (note that they include kernel and fuse related packages...):

Two people have said their boot splash doesn't show up anymore after the latest updates. Instead they get the regular boot messages scrolling by.

usplash-theme-gnewsense was updated while package updates were on hold. I'll see if there's any difference on my system if I revert to the previous version.
