When I click on some icons on the desktop, this is seemingly random, the icons disappear and I can't right click on the desktop. Killing all nautilus processes doesnt help.

If I log out then back in, gnome fails to load. When I try "browse filesystem" nautilus doesn't load.

when trying to load nautilus from the console I receive the following error:
(nautilus:3215): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

This first occurred when using gnoppix as a live CD and continues to occur while it is installed to disk.
