on the mailing list, after a bit of discussion about the differences between the new project file importer and the track-based one, remon wrote to me:

>So technically both options are available: each imported file gets it's own
>track vs all imported files are placed in one track.

>Suggestions how to present the user which option traverso should use for file
>import etc is much appreciated!

so, here's my response:

it could be as simple as checkbox options in the file import dialogs....

for the track-based file import:

[ ] copy files to project folder?
------
[ ] place selected files sequentially on current track?
or
[ ] place selected files, one file per track, going down the sheet beginning at the current track (add tracks if required)?

for the new project file import:

[ ] copy files to project folder?
------
[ ] place selected files sequentially on the first track?
or
[ ] place selected files in the new session, one file per track?

OR, to make it a bit more comprehensive...

for the track-based import, AFTER the files are chosen in the file browser:

[ ] copy files to project folder?
------
[ ] place selected file sequentially on current track?
or

           filename1  filename2  filename3  filename4  ...
trackname1    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
trackname2    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
trackname3    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
trackname4    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
.
.
.

for the new project file import, AFTER the files are chosen in the file browser AND the user has indicated the number of tracksand sheets in the project:

[ ] copy files to project folder?
------
                        filename1  filename2  filename3
[enter SHEETname1 here]
[enter trackname1 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
[enter trackname2 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
[enter trackname3 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
[enter trackname4 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
.
.
.

                        filename1  filename2  filename3
[enter SHEETname2 here]
[enter trackname1 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
[enter trackname2 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
[enter trackname3 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
[enter trackname4 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
.
.
.

                        filename1  filename2  filename3
[enter SHEETname3 here]
[enter trackname1 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
[enter trackname2 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
[enter trackname3 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
[enter trackname4 here]    [ ]        [ ]        [ ]
.
.
.

this would allow a user to do a lot of project setup effeciently, avoiding a lot of drag'n'drop nonsense.

cheers!
