After some disk space problems it finally built. Both versions install and work fine.

I got the source in Bazaar after I unpacked the internal tarballs. I made 2 branches: 1 for deltah and 1 for deltah-security.

We want to have our own builds instead of the packages from upstream. Putting openoffice.org in packages-to-remove would keep it from polluting our repo, but that would also delete our own builds. Building both OO.o branches takes more than a day, so we don't want to do that every time Builder runs. I was able to get reprepro's FilterList feature working. This makes reprepro ignore every "purge" package listed in purge-hardy when updating. It doesn't remove any packages, so I added some code to handle that too. Revision 436.

I added OO.o to the list of VCS packages (rev. 437,438). Next Builder run should process it all.

The bazaar server on sandbox can't swallow pushing the branch on there. It grinds to a halt at around 370 MiB pushed (of 960 MiB total for 1 branch) on account of (I think) memory shortage.

In summary, the options investigated so far:

1) gen script: doesn't work because dpkg-source can't handle binary diffs (boost lib sits in an internal tarball). Upgrading dpkg-dev is not an option because of dependency hell.

2) Keeping our own source(s) in VCS: doesn't work because [see above].

I'm out of ideas.

I'm trying this setup:

1) Put latest version of OO.o from every component in a separate bzr branch. deltah-updates and deltah-security have the same version, but I can't think of a way to make reprepro put one version in packages/ in both components, so I'm just going to have to waste some space (a few GiB), bandwith and time on this.
2) Remove the offending boost version from every branch.
3) Remove openoffice.org from the repo by hand and put it in purge-hardy so that it doesn't get pulled in again.

The problematic boost version can probably be removed. From #dev.openoffice.org:

<samgee> I'm looking at the source of OO.o in Ubuntu 8.04. It has 2 versions of boost. Are they both necessary?
<samgee> that's OO.o 2.4.0/2.4.1, btw
<_rene_> samgee: no, only one is used. (and probably the package uses neither of them anyway)
<_rene_> samgee: old versioons of OOo have one boost for windows and one for sane systems, afair
<samgee> I'm seeing v 1.30.2 and 1.34.1
<samgee> so you're saying that I can delete 1.30.2 without any problems?
<_rene_> you have to look what you need (wtf are you doingt stuff on 2.4.1 anyway?) but yes, 1.30 afaik is win, 34 boost.
<_rene_> (or the other way round, don't remember)
<_rene_> but I think the first is more likely

<quidam> samgee: if it is including code from db it might need the mersene file to be replaced too

OO.o in Hardy doesn't seem to have scandoc.pl.

Reported on the gnu-linux-libre list [1]:

Also, a go-oo folk told me -in a very vague way that needs a deeper look- that even the go-oo version isn't fully free, just "freer". It seems to include at least a binary only library -which they told me is free, but they are lazy to cross compile-, several language tools -hypenation filters and such- with bogus licenses and some other minor things.

Two pieces in OOO under the Artistic license:

Although the license for the Boost libraries seems to be different for current versions: http://www.boost.org/users/license.html (fossology confirms the new license to be that one for all files).
