OK, thank you for following up. I had worked on 2 possible implementations back then, but never posted them. Maybe they were not good enough, I can't remember. Anyway, if you no longer need this feature, it doesn't really matter. Closing.

Case closed. I found a simpler solution for 'debbuild', so 'quilt import' need not be changed.

Would it be possible to extend 'quilt import' so that it reads a single patch file from STDIN?

   quilt import -P virtual-patch-0042 -

This would permit consistent use of 'quilt' in rpm's '%autosetup/%autopatch' mechanism (https://github.com/rpm-software-management/rpm/blob/master/macros.in#L1106). The '%__scm_apply_quilt' macro with the 'quilt import' invocation is used in a pipe in '%apply_patch' (https://github.com/rpm-software-management/rpm/blob/master/macros.in#L1130), providing the contents of a (if necessary uncompressed) patch file through STDIN.

If 'quilt import' were able to catch this input and redirect it to the file(name) specified with '-P %{-m*}', the current macro could be made operational without having to resort to '%{__cat}' and '%{__rm}' (https://github.com/rpm-software-management/rpm/pull/53).
