About This Group

It provides an answer to the need for a comprehensive approach to the adoption of Free Software in educational institutions. Its aim is to promote and encourage the use of Free Software in universities and schools of all levels, emphasizing awareness of the positive impact of Free Software on society as a whole. We believe that, along with technical support and availability of adequate free educational programs, an improved understanding of the fundamentals of the GNU philosophy will significantly aid the decisional process. This approach will ensure success and effectiveness of the migration
experience over time.

In order to fulfill its mission, the team performs the following tasks:

+ Builds an Education section under the GNU Project website.

+ Finds out about educational institutions around the world who are committed to Free Software and chooses those which best represent the
GNU philosophy to list them under the Case Studies subsection in the website.

+ Finds out about Free (as in freedom) programs that are being used by educational institutions with specific purposes; for example, to show and effectively put into practice the freedoms that Free Software grants them. It lists those programs under the Educational Resources subsection in the website.

+ Finds out about universities around the world that offer degree courses focusing on Free Software so as to provide this information to the public.

+ Maintains a dialogue with educational institutions to listen to their difficulties and provide support.

+ Keeps in contact with other groups around the world committed to the promotion of Free Software in education.

What this group does not do:

- It does not list every single educational institution that uses Free Software. There are other projects and groups that attempt to do that [1].

- It does not list every single free program used or suitable for educational purposes. Such database already exists [2].

For further information about this group and to learn more about its mission statement, see The Education Team.
