Discover module is a very important part of Internet of Things stack. Because of the LWIPs low footprint, it gonna be used in may IoT devices. Hence mDNS support should be added in the Network stack. I'm too interested in this task. Let me know if you have started this job. I can help in both responder and querier designs.

It seems there is still no official mDNS component in lwIP.

I have written a contained mDNS + DNS-SD responder. If there is still sufficient interest in this, I would consider putting in some effort to 'clean' it and contribute it to lwIP.

I also have an SSDP responder for uPnP discovery, however uPnP  requires a HTTP server to serve the XML service descriptor. My HTTP implementation is not highly portable, so this component would need to be provided by the user.

References Internet Draft: draft-cheshire-dnsext-multicastdns-08.txt (http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-cheshire-dnsext-multicastdns/)

Create a multicast DNS module that can be optionally compiled into an LwIP application that enables the application to participate in multicast DNS host name resolution.

Refer to section 8 in above document.

This functionality would enable other hosts on a local network to resolve the LwIP applications local host name (.local)  without the need to update or manage a DNS server via mDNS clients such as Apple's Bonjour and Linux Ahahi.
