What do you think about replacing the three gal_data_t flags GAL_DATA_FLAG_SORT_CH, GAL_DATA_FLAG_SORTED_I and GAL_DATA_FLAG_SORTED_D with a single variable able to contain four values like:
SORT_UNTESTED
UNSORTED
SORTED_I
SORTED_D
This would prevent invalid states like GAL_DATA_FLAG_SORTED_I and GAL_DATA_FLAG_SORTED_D set both to true.
