I've included the full license text.

I've added a copyright notice.

Thank you!

You've correctly added a copyright notice, however, for short licenses like Modified BSD, one should include the complete license text rather than a reference to it.

No, it has no valid copyright notice.

I've added a license and copyright section at the end of README.md.

It does have a copyright notice but not an author, so I guess it's fine?

I'm sorry, I didn't proceed after it turned out that the first non-trivial file I checked, README.md, lacked the notices.

> except https://github.com/nutanix/libvfio-user/blob/master/include/vfio-user.h which doesn't have an author. This file is based on another BSD3-licensed project (SPDK).

That file also need a copyright notice (lists of the authors don't matter).

> Also, the license is in file LICENSE, does it have to be renamed to COPYING?

In this case, it doesn't matter: you use a short permissive license, it should be included in every file, anyway.

This is correct.

All our file have a copyright and license notice except https://github.com/nutanix/libvfio-user/blob/master/include/vfio-user.h which doesn't have an author. This file is based on another BSD3-licensed project (SPDK).

Also, the license is in file LICENSE, does it have to be renamed to COPYING?

We didn't include a copyright and license notice in trivial files (e.g. .gitignore) as explained in https://savannah.nongnu.org/maintenance/ValidNotices/.

Is there something specific we need to do?

Please be sure to add valid copyright and license notices to files in your tarball.

Registration Details

  • Name: libvfio-user
  • System Name:  libvfio-user
  • Type: non-GNU software and documentation
  • License: Modified BSD License

Description:

libvfio-user is a user space library that implements the vfio-user protocol. vfio-user is a protocol [1] that allows out-of-process emulation [2] in QEMU. Although vfio-user is not specific to QEMU, QEMU is its primary use case. vfio-user is modelled after VFIO.

libvfio-user is implemented in C however we plan to implement bindings for other languages.

libvfio-user was initially named MUSER, which contained a kernel module so the whole project was released under dual license. We have dropped the kernel module thus there is no requirement for being dual licensed.
