Well, you wrote that I should discuss this on the avrdude mailing list and I did this.

No response to my "need info" request.

Sample implementation turned out that even dumb terminals
are considered to be intelligent enough to handle simple
carriage returns.

Please use -q.  Depending on a simple "magic" terminal name
isn't better anyway.

If there's serious objection, the bug report could still
be re-opened.

I'm not sure whether this is the right way to go, as you
would arbitrarily depend on a single magic name only.
What about TERM=unknown, or TERM=network?

IMHO, if at all, we should then correctly link against
libtermcap, see whether the "cr" capability is available,
and turn it off if it isn't.  OTOH, that's a lot of overhead
compared to just using -q -- just MHO.

Please discuss that on the avrdude-dev mailinglist to see
how the other developers think about that.

The hashmarks while downloading only work on intelligent terminals. If TERM is set to dumb, it would be good if they could be suppressed automatically by avrdude. (Yes, I know the -q option.)
