Thanks for the patch, applied with few stylistic changes.

I also rewrote serbb_win32.c to match the fixed pin numbering.

I use avrdude 5.1 and linux 2.6.14.

There are two problems. I think a) causes b).

a) Pin numbering for DB9 PC serial connectors is 5 for GND
   .. 9 for RI. Numbering in avrdude.conf is confusing.
b) There are corresponding errors in serbb_posix.c.

I add a patchfile named avrdude.patch.

The problem of a) is, that changes case changes for win ... too.
