I can replicate a similar bug in Ubuntu 8.10 using GNOME with StumpWM as my window manager. My StumpWM version is "Debian git checkout 6e67440f9.. compiled Mon Aug 31 2009".
If I lock my screen using the `xlock` command (version xlockmore 5.22), occasionally when I unlock (after more than about 30 minutes locked) my screen I get the same symptoms. My bash brompt cursor is a hollow box, and I can't execute any StumpWM commands. If I switch to a virtual terminal and kill all of my bash processes, then I regain control of StumpWM. Or if the "nautilus-desktop" window is visible on my screen, then I can click and drag icons on my desktop to regain control of StumpWM.
