Using debuggers from day 1
     posted by coriordan, Sat Dec 19 21:22:17 2009 - 0 replies

It hit me that I should really introduce debuggers right from the start. Newbie programmers always debug their code with printf, and that's a habit that takes years to shake.

I'll do some writing about this and check it in. I'm still not back seriously working on this project, but it's always in the back of my mind.

I'm not back, but I wish I was

I haven't found time to work on this project, but in the long term, it's still a project I hope to finish.

So this "news" item is just to say: a year of silence doesn't mean I've given up :-)

My current focus is the http://en.swpat.org wiki for campaigns against software patents.

July 2008: I'm back again, I think

Nothing has changed in my life to give me more spare time, but I've suddenly got an interest in this again.

I've decided to use TexInfo, so learning_gnu_c.texinfo is the file I'm doing development in.

I'm back. (a little)

I've fixed a few bugs, including the ones reported by the savannah bug reporting system (thanks C├ędric Barboiron). I've also made some very small changes.
I still don't have much spare time, but I'm getting used to working on a lot of projects at once ;-)
Over the next month I'll continue to do occassional work on the book, and in January 2004 I hope to have some regular time for it.

Report on lack of progress

hello all/none.

I have done little or no work on this book since the start of the
year. In December of 2002 I decided a rewrite/reorganise would be a
good idea, this proved too big a task for the spare time I had. The
project went on hold half way through the rewrite; so what exists now
is a jumbled mess.

I do have plans to restart work on this, I have to find some kind
of plan that would give me the time in my life to do this.

2003 end-of-January update

Hello all.
The last two months have left me little time to work on the book.
This made December a bad time to begin a rewrite :)

After using TexInfo for a while I remembered why I didn't like it:
It's a crappy language but has great tools. In contrast, DocBook is ...

breakage planned, 1 or 2 months
     posted by coriordan, Sun Dec 15 07:44:32 2002 - 0 replies

My work in the next 2 months will leave the source in the CVS
repositry in a broken state i.e. it will not be possible to generate
a readable document from it.

The end result will look like a rewrite but this is not as drastic as
it sounds. My plan involves 4 stages: ...

Overhaul beginning
     posted by coriordan, Fri Dec 13 02:40:40 2002 - 0 replies

In the next two months I will be rewriting much of the book. My main
reason is that I want to re-order many of the topics. Since this is
my first book, I didn't plan ahead and couldn't foresee some of the
issues I encountered. I may even convert the book back to TexInfo. ...

GFDL 1.2, Title change, direction change...
     posted by coriordan, Thu Nov 28 04:10:48 2002 - 0 replies

I've just updated the license of the book to version 1.2 of the GNU
Free Documentation License. It's possible that this is the first
project ever released under this new version!

I've also changed the title (again). I think this one might stick. ...
